THE WILD WHALE
RESEARCH FOUNDATION

The Waters Around Hawai'i

Our waters are home to a variety of whales and dolphins (cetaceans), and provide a unique opportunity to learn about some of the world's least known of these species.

In 1979, Dan founded the Wild Whale Research Foundation to protect Hawai'i’s whales and their environment, by generating and advancing credible research.

Since 2002, Dan has also worked in collaboration with scientists from the Cascadia Research Collective, to more fully understand the lesser-known tropical oceanic species around Hawai'i, such as beaked, pilot, and false killer whales.

Many of these "native" hawai'ian whales are so few in number, they need our protection. Through our research, we learn as much as we can about their biology and behavior, to lessen the risk they face at human impact.
